Jamie began playing the bass as a high school freshman in Southern California. He played his first gig at age 16 and says the show went so badly that he sold his bass gear the next day, vowing never to play again. Soon, however, the urge to play brought him back to the bass. In California, he’s played with an eclectic selection of bands from jump blues to synth-pop; swing to alt-rock; reggae to funk. Jamie moved to Phoenix in 2001 to pursue a doctorate in psychology. Shortly after moving to Phoenix, he played in a funk band with Tom Kirsch where the initial seeds of The Catfish Groove Farm were sown. Jamie is a licensed psychologist living in Phoenix, Arizona, with his wife Lesley (aka "Lovee"), dogs (K.D., Yoko, and Jaco), horse (Jones), and cat (Dinky).
Jamie enjoys a wide variety of music and takes inspiration from disparate sources. The bassists who have influenced Jamie’s development as a player are: Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten, James Jamerson, Bootsy Collins, Charles Mingus, Rocco Prestia, Gerald Veasley, Paul McCartney, and Geddy Lee. Other musicians who have made a significant impact on Jamie are: Linda Martinez, Jason Freese, Pat Leon, Roland Orzabal, James Brown, DIG, Goldfrapp, The Beatles, and on and on.
Jamie sees his role as the bassist in The Catfish Groove Farm as the bridge between the complex rhythms of the drums and the lyrical melodies and chord textures of the guitar and keyboards. He prefers to sit solidly in the pocket and slave away to the groove.
In addition to playing bass and writing songs, Jamie also has a passion for recording and the production side of music. He is currently in the process of building a recording studio in his home to record future Catfish Groove Farm albums and other projects.
